Top questions and answers:

Q. Do I need a Hindu Pries/Yaj to officiate over a shaadi- Gandharva Vivah?

A. No officiate is required for a Gandharva Vivah. It involves the mutual consent of both parties and a simple exchange of garlands upon which the marriage is confirmed. Often conducted in the presence of some deity of the couple’s choice.

Q. Where can I find out more about same-sex unions in Hinduism?

A. Try the book ‘Same-Sex Marriage in India’ or the paper ‘“Wedding of Two Souls”: Same-Sex Marriage and Hindu Traditions’ both written by Ruth Vanita. There are also online resources like:

Gay and Lesbian Vaishnava Association

Wikipedia- LGBT issues and Hinduism
